Steps to Completing the Program

Aiming to acquire broad knowledge and perspective

In the first year, acquire fundamental skills in the Introduction to Research course and conduct collaborative field research in Kochi in the Comprehensive Kochi Research course to expand your knowledge and perspective.
These fundamental courses that combine humanities and social sciences research perspectives provide unique opportunities to interact with students and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
In the Special Research course, students receive guidance from faculty supervisors on conducting research towards completion of the graduation thesis.
Along with the above required courses, enroll in elective courses that provide further skills necessary for research.

Modern Fields of Study!
—Become a specialist with a multifaceted outlook—

In our graduate school, the two academic areas of humanities and social sciences are combined. Choose one of three courses of study within a single major.
By combining the Humanities and Social Sciences Program into one graduate major, students can widen their field of academic research while having the freedom to customize their themes.
Develop the skills necessary to tackle the challenges of the 21st century with versatility and perspective.

Original Core Courses!
—Think about the world while being self-aware—

There are required core subjects unique to this graduate major, Introduction to Academic Research and Comprehensive Kochi Research, both of which combine humanities and social sciences research traditions.
The Introduction to Academic Research course aims to develop the fundamental research skills of investigation, reporting and discussion based on literary materials. The Comprehensive Kochi Research course aims to develop broad knowledge and perspective through fieldwork research exploring various aspects of Kochi.
The work completed in the required core subjects is compiled and published as the Comprehensive Kochi Research Anthology.

About the Research Project

A course in which graduate school students participate in a collaborative research project with faculty members and receive practical research guidance while working on the graduation thesis.

In this graduate major, students may choose the Research Project in place of the Special Research course.
Traditionally, applicants to the graduate program apply with an original theme in mind and receive research guidance on that theme through the Special Research course after acceptance into the program.
In contrast, in the Research Project program, applicants choose from a selection of collaborative research themes in the application process. Once accepted and enrolled, students participate in the project while receiving instruction from faculty members in preparation for the graduate thesis.
