Extended Enrollment Program

In the Humanities and Social Sciences Program in the Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences, students who are unable to enroll in the required number of courses to complete the program in two years due to reasons such as employment or being unable to fulfill the added financial obligations of enrolling within two years are eligible for extended enrollment which lasts between 2.5 years to 4 years (half-year increments).

Through this program, the tuition fee of the standard two-year graduate program can be paid in equal installments over an approved period.

After enrolling in the master's program, there are cases in which enrollment durations may be adjusted (shortened or lengthened) based on circumstances related to employment, job transfers, etc.

Extended Enrollment
Q&A

Under what conditions will I be eligible for extended enrollment?
Generally, students who have employment obligations are eligible for extended enrollment. There are also cases where other circumstances may be considered regarding eligibility for extended enrollment.
Has there ever been a case where extended enrollment was further extended?
In the Humanities and Social Sciences Program in the Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences, the maximum allowable extension for enrollment is two years beyond the standard two years allowed for the degree. For example, if you are approved for three years of study (one additional year after the standard two years), you may be approved for one more year of study for a total of four years. No more than four years of enrollment will be approved per program policy, regardless of circumstance.
How do I apply for extended enrollment?
Fill out the extended enrollment application form and submit it to the administration office before you register for courses. If you are new to the graduate program, you may leave the faculty recommendation field blank, however, you may be contacted for explanation at a later date. If you are registering by mail, you may send your extended enrollment application together. After enrolling in the graduate program, if you need an additional extension or wish to change the terms of an approved extension, you must submit another application during the given period in early September or early March.
I am considering enrolling in the graduate program but only if I can be approved for extended enrollment.
To find out if you can be approved for extended enrollment in advance, please submit the extended enrollment application by the end of February, independent of the enrollment procedure, and we can inform you of the results before the enrollment deadline.
How is tuition paid in the case of extended enrollment?
Students who have been deemed eligible for extended enrollment will pay the standard two-year tuition split evenly over the entire course of their enrollment. For example, if a student enrolls for a total of three years, they will pay the standard two-year tuition over the course of three years, meaning they will pay 2/3 of the standard tuition each semester. If a student who has already completed one year of study and extends their enrollment for another two years, they will have one year's worth of tuition to pay over the course of two years, which will halve the tuition cost during this extension period. If students approved for extended enrollment wish to retroactively shorten their enrollment due to employment-related reasons, they will pay the remaining amount owed over the course of the shortened duration. Reduced tuition fees are applicable only to unpaid tuition, so if you wish to apply for extended enrollment, please make sure not to pay your tuition in advance at the time of initial enrollment.
Are there any restrictions on the number of credits that can be taken by extended enrollment students?
The purpose of extended enrollment is to support students who are limited in their ability to enroll in courses due to employment. Students who are able to take enough credits to where a limit has to be placed would not be eligible. We currently do not have a maximum limit on the number of credits students can take, but please understand the purpose of the extended enrollment program and comply with the rules of the faculty.
