Community Banashi: Stories of Place from Australia and Japan

国際社会コースのリングリー先生とバーゴイン先生が、インターナショナルなレベルでの映像プロジェクトに取り組んでいます。小学校や地域のコミュニティを中心に、様々な人々が関わり合うなかで地域の文化を映像として残していこうとする試みです。

“We are proud to have successfully completed an international film project related to culture and education, entitled Community Banashi: Stories of Place from Australia and Japan. This project was undertaken with Dr. Naomi Wilks-Smith and Dr. Li Ping Thong from RMIT University’s School of Education in Melbourne, and was funded by the Australia-Japan Foundation, which is part of the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

 

The film outcome represents the conclusion of a very productive international collaboration. Through this project, we were able to tell an important local community story from Kochi, the traditional Tachi-Odori dance festival at Kagami Primary School. We partnered with Garrthalala Homelands School serving indigenous students in a remote part of Australia’s Northern Territory. Garrthalala students produced a film dedicated to their traditional Lipalipa canoe story. The Tachi-Odori and Lipalipa films connected students, teachers, academics, and community elders through the creative medium of storytelling. Our aim was to celebrate and promote dynamic preservation of local culture at the school and community level.

 

The first outcome from this project is our dedicated website which hosts the short films from the two cooperating schools/communities. The website has many features and lots of information about the project. The films (and their connecting background stories) can be viewed here:

These are excellent short films from the perspective of children and community, with subtitles in Japanese and English. The Garrthalala Lipalipa film and the Kagami-mura Tachi-Odori film tell fascinating stories of place through the eyes of children. Through these uniquely student-created short films, local landscapes and student home languages are celebrated.

 

These bilingual short films were made possible, in part, through the linguistic and intercultural skills of our Kochi University students. We are proud that two of our third-year students from the International Studies Course in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Ms. Miu Kubokawa and Ms. Kirara Hosokawa, were able to contribute by doing the Japanese subtitles for the Garrthalala Lipalipa film from Australia. A second important out come of the project was a recent screening of Community Banashi: Stories of Place from Australia and Japan at the prestigious Australian Centre for the Moving Image on October 23 (ACMI, Federation Square, Melbourne).

 

 

 

 

 

Teachers, academics, education officials, and members of various professional associations attended the ACMI screening. The films looked amazing on the big screen and although we could not attend from Japan, we received excellent feedback and a resounding round of applause for our contribution on the Kochi side. Dr. Wilks-Smith and Dr. Li Ping Thong from RMIT represented the project and have shared photos of the event.”

「この度、「コミュニティばなし」のプロジェクトの翻訳に関わることができ、大変光栄に思っています。翻訳するにあたって、土佐弁と呼ばれる地方の方言を日常で使用している私にとって、標準語かつ口語での翻訳を求められる作業は非常に難しいと感じました。しかし、短編映画の登場人物である子どもたちを想像しながら翻訳することを楽しみ、素敵な作品を一緒に完成させることができたことをうれしく思います。このプロジェクトを通して、翻訳することの困難さを経験しただけではなく、自分とは異なる文化や価値観も学ぶことができました。このプロジェクトが、誰かの異文化理解の手助けになればと思っています。」
